Im Zentrum des südveracruzanischen Petrochemie-Reviers am Golf von Mexiko bildet Coatzacoalcos den wichtigsten Erdöl- und Chemiehafen des Landes. Der Umschlag von rund 2,53 Mio. Das Hinterland erschliesst der Hafen über Strasse und die Ferrosur-Bahn, zudem als atlantisches Tor des interozeanischen Korridors über den Isthmus von Tehuantepec nach Salina Cruz am Pazifik. Verzollte Containerfracht bündelt man praktischer über Veracruz weiter nördlich, während Flüssigchemie und Projektladung direkt hier laufen.
