Schon 1779 entstand bei Coteau-du-Lac der erste Schleusenkanal Nordamerikas, flankiert von einem britischen Fort zur Sicherung der St.-Lorenz-Passage – heute eine National Historic Site. Der Ort am Nordufer des Lac Saint-François, rund 50 km südwestlich von Montreal, war im 19. Jahrhundert ein bedeutender Einfuhrhafen nach Oberkanada, verlor diese Rolle aber mit dem Beauharnois-Kanal und endgültig mit dem St.-Lorenz-Seeweg von 1959. Kommerzieller Stückgut- oder Containerumschlag findet hier nicht mehr statt; die vorbeiführende Seeweg-Schifffahrt lädt und löscht in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield oder Montreal. Für Speditionen ist Coteau Landing damit vor allem von historischem, nicht von operativem Interesse.
