Frontera prägt die Erdölwirtschaft von Tabasco: Der Flusshafen am Río Grijalva, früher Puerto Álvaro Obregón, versorgt vor allem die Offshore-Plattformen von Pemex im Golf von Mexiko. Rund zehn Kilometer von der Flussmündung entfernt gelegen, ist er einer der beiden wichtigsten Häfen des Bundesstaats und kürzer an die Pemex-Plattformen angebunden als Dos Bocas oder Isla del Carmen. Allerdings ist der rund zehn Kilometer lange Kanal mit nur 1,8 bis 2 m sehr flach, sodass keine grossen Hochseeschiffe verkehren. Für Speditionen ist Frontera damit ein spezialisierter Versorgungs- und Regionalhafen für die Öl- und Gasindustrie sowie lokalen Handel, kein Containerhafen. Container- und internationale Linienfracht laufen praktisch über Dos Bocas, Coatzacoalcos und Veracruz.
