Gold River entstand in den 1960er-Jahren als Werkssiedlung für eine Zellstofffabrik der Tahsis Company an der Westküste von Vancouver Island; mit der Schliessung des Werks 1998 verlor der Hafen seine angestammte Ladung. Die tiefseetaugliche Anlage am Ende des Nootka Sound wird heute als West Coast Marine Terminals auf rund 236 Acres für industrielle Nutzung neu erschlossen, doch regelmässiger kommerzieller Linienverkehr ist bislang nicht etabliert. Container- oder Zollabfertigung für Speditionsladung bietet der Standort derzeit nicht. Für planbare Fracht auf Vancouver Island sind Nanaimo und Port Alberni die naheliegenden Häfen, für überregionale Mengen Vancouver am Festland.
