Holyhead ist kein Containerhafen, sondern Grossbritanniens wichtigste RoRo-Verbindung nach Irland. Vom Standort auf Anglesey laufen die Fähren von Stena Line und Irish Ferries mehrmals täglich nach Dublin; die Strecke gilt als verkehrsreichste RoRo-Achse der Irischen See. 2023 wurden rund 4,8 Mio. Tonnen Fracht abgewickelt, ganz überwiegend begleitete und unbegleitete Trailer, Lkw und Auflieger statt Containerstapel. Seit dem Brexit ist Holyhead zudem ein Zollpunkt für den Warenverkehr zwischen GB und der EU bzw. Irland, mit entsprechenden Grenz- und Zollkontrollen. Die Anbindung ans Hinterland läuft über die A55 und die Bahnlinie Richtung Crewe ins englische Kernnetz. Für Containersendungen ist Liverpool die nächste Alternative, für weitere RoRo-Kapazität Fishguard oder Pembroke nach Rosslare.
