Thunfisch, Makrele, Sardinen, Garnelen und Hummer prägen den Umschlag von Kolachel: Der Standort an der Lakkadivensee im Distrikt Kanyakumari ist einer der bedeutendsten Fischereihäfen von Tamil Nadu, dessen Fänge bis in andere Bundesstaaten und ins Ausland gehen. Ein kommerzieller Fracht- oder Containerbetrieb ist hier nicht etabliert; der vielfach diskutierte Tiefseehafen ist Planung geblieben und wurde zwischenzeitlich auf das nahe Enayam verlagert. Als offener Roadstead ohne ausgebaute Kaianlagen eignet sich Kolachel nicht für Stückgut-, Container- oder Zollabfertigung im Speditionssinn. Für solche Sendungen sind der Grosshafen Tuticorin (V. O.
