Seit 1974 prägt die Arun-LNG-Anlage die Industrieküste von Lhokseumawe im Norden Acehs an der Strasse von Malakka. Nachdem die Exportverflüssigung 2014 mangels Speisegas stillgelegt wurde, arbeitet Arun heute als LNG-Import- und Regasifizierungsterminal. Der eigentliche Mehrzweckhafen Krueng Geukueh ist seit 2009 für allgemeine Fracht offen und dient vor allem dem Düngemittelwerk Pupuk Iskandar Muda sowie Agrar-Schüttgut: 2023 liefen rund 52'673 Tonnen Rohpalmöl und Palmkernschalen über den Kai. Lhokseumawe ist damit ein Energie- und Industriestandort der Sonderwirtschaftszone Arun Lhokseumawe, kein Containerhafen – Stückgut- und Boxenverkehr bleiben begrenzt. Das Hinterland erschliesst Krueng Geukueh über die Trans-Sumatra-Strasse; eine Bahnanbindung fehlt. Für Containersendungen nach Nordsumatra ist Belawan bei Medan die zuverlässige Alternative, regional ergänzt durch Malahayati bei Banda Aceh.
