Ab 1899 entstanden in Michipicoten Harbour Erzkais und ein Eisenbahn-Verladegerüst, als der Eisenerzabbau bei Wawa begann; der Hafen wurde zum Umschlagpunkt für Erz, Grubenholz, Schnittholz und Kohle und besass zeitweise sogar einen kanadischen Zollposten. Als einer der wenigen Tiefwasserhäfen an der rauen Ostküste des Oberen Sees liegt er rund 200 km nördlich von Sault Ste. Marie. Heute ist die kommerzielle Frachtrelevanz allerdings begrenzt und überwiegend historisch geprägt; ein regelmässiger Linien- oder Containerverkehr besteht nicht (Kaitiefe rund 4,9 m). Für verlässliche Grossseen-Frachtkapazität nutzen Verlader Thunder Bay oder Sault Ste. Marie.
