Im Südwestzipfel Südkoreas am Gelben Meer gelegen, ist Mokpo eng mit dem Daebul-Industriekomplex und einer ausgeprägten Schiffbauindustrie verbunden. Der Hafen schlägt trockenes und flüssiges Schüttgut, Container, Stahl, Forstprodukte und Fahrzeuge um und dient zugleich als Fähranlaufpunkt zu den vorgelagerten Inseln sowie nach China und Japan. Am Samhak-Kai stehen vier Liegeplätze für Getreide, Kohle und Stückgut bereit, die Schiffe bis rund 30'000 Tonnen aufnehmen; der Nordhafen ist auf den Schiffbau ausgerichtet, der Taebul-Hafen auf die Binnenindustrie. Als regionaler Mehrzweckhafen bedient Mokpo damit vor allem die lokale Wirtschaft der Provinz Jeollanam-do. Für grosse internationale Containermengen sind die Grosshäfen Gwangyang und Busan die naheliegenden Alternativen.
