Die Hakucho-Brücke teilt Muroran in einen inneren und einen äusseren Hafenbereich an der Uchiura-Bucht im Süden Hokkaidos. Schwerindustrie prägt das Frachtprofil weit stärker als der Containerverkehr: Stahlwerke, Schiffbau, eine Erdölraffinerie und Kohleumschlag bestimmen den Umschlag. Am inneren Hafen liegen Erzliegeplätze für Schiffe von 100'000 bis 150'000 Tonnen sowie ein Tankerkai mit rund 11 Metern Wassertiefe für Einheiten bis 50'000 DWT. Anfang Dezember 2025 legte ein Brand an einem Winderhitzer den Hochofen des Werks von Nippon Steel still; das Unternehmen rechnete mit mehreren Monaten bis zur Wiederinbetriebnahme. Reine Boxenverkehre spielen nur eine untergeordnete Rolle und laufen meist über Tomakomai weiter östlich an der Pazifikküste. Über Strasse und Bahn ist das Hinterland an den Grossraum Sapporo angebunden; wer FCL-Container disponiert, prüft Tomakomai oder Hakodate als Alternative.
