Mit 32 Liegeplätzen und Tiefen, die Schiffe bis 300'000 dwt zulassen, zählt Oita zu den leistungsstarken Industriehäfen an der Nordostküste von Kyushu. Rund 50 Mio. Tonnen Güter werden hier jährlich umgeschlagen, dominiert von Stahl, Chemikalien und Mineralölprodukten. Prägend ist das Werk von Nippon Steel (Kyushu Works, Bereich Oita), dessen Stahlexporte sowie Eisenerz- und Kohleimporte einen Grossteil des Bulk-Verkehrs ausmachen. Daneben verfügt der Hafen über ein Containerterminal mit rund 250'000 TEU Kapazität sowie Öl- und Offshore-Liegeplätze für Grosstanker. Die Hinterlandanbindung erfolgt über das Strassen- und Bahnnetz von Kyushu. Für umfangreichere Containerverkehre bieten sich die nahen Drehkreuze Kitakyushu und Hakata (Fukuoka) an.
