Mit einem 17,7 Hektar grossen Containerterminal, das über 6'400 Stellplätze und rund 1'450 Reefer-Anschlüsse bietet, ist Port Chalmers das Seetor der unteren Südinsel Neuseelands. Betrieben von Port Otago, zählt der Hafen zu den zwei tiefsten Containerhäfen des Landes und kann die grössten im Neuseeland-Verkehr eingesetzten Containerschiffe abfertigen. Umgeschlagen werden vor allem Exportgüter der Regionen Otago und Southland: Containerfracht, gekühlte Produkte wie Fleisch und Milchprodukte sowie Exportstammholz von einem eigenen Logyard. Zwei Containerbrücken erlauben die gleichzeitige Abfertigung zweier Schiffe, und wharfseitige Kühlläger in Dunedin fassen bis zu 10'500 Tonnen Kühlware. Das Hinterland ist über Strasse und Bahn an Dunedin und das Agrarland Otago angebunden. Für die übrige Südinsel sind Lyttelton (Christchurch) und Bluff die wichtigsten Alternativhäfen.
