Port Alice entstand 1917 als Werkssiedlung rund um eine Zellstofffabrik im Norden von Vancouver Island; benannt nach Alice Whalen, lebte der Ort jahrzehntelang von diesem einen Betrieb. Mit der endgültigen Schliessung der Fabrik 2015 und ihrem Abriss 2023 verlor der Anlegeplatz seine kommerzielle Frachtfunktion – heute hat Port Alice nur noch sehr begrenzte Speditionsrelevanz. Reguläre Container-, Stückgut- oder Zollabfertigung ist hier nicht bestätigt. Verlader im Norden der Insel wickeln Seefracht praktisch über Port Hardy, Nanaimo oder das Gateway Vancouver ab.
