Bekannt wurde Port Dalhousie als nördliches Eingangstor der frühen Welland-Kanäle, über die Schiffe einst die Niagara-Schwelle zwischen Ontario- und Eriesee umfuhren; mit der Verlegung des modernen Welland-Kanals verlor der Standort in St. Catharines seine Frachtfunktion.
