Seit der Eröffnung 1975 wandelte sich Puerto Madero – heute meist Puerto Chiapas genannt – von einem kleinen Agrar- und Fischereihafen zum südlichsten Mehrzweckhafen Mexikos, rund 22 km nördlich der Grenze zu Guatemala. Die Liegeplätze 1 bis 9 wickeln heute Stückgut und Container ab, darunter Stahlblech-Coils, Holz, Schüttmineralien und Fahrzeuge. Bei den Schüttmineralien hat sich der Export von Titanmineral nach China zu einem Standbein entwickelt; daneben laufen Agrarschüttgut und seit 2005 auch Kreuzfahrtschiffe. Ein Containerlager von rund 6 ha, über 60'000 m² überdachte Flächen und ein doppelgleisiger Bahnanschluss direkt an der Pier unterstützen den Umschlag. Echter Containerlinienverkehr bleibt jedoch begrenzt; für grosse Boxenvolumen sind Lázaro Cárdenas oder Manzanillo die nächste Adresse. Für Speditionen ist Puerto Chiapas bei Stahl-, Holz-, Bulk- und Projektladung im Soconusco interessant.
