Als Teil des Hafenverbunds Fushiki-Toyama bedient Shinminato die Industrieregion Chubu an der japanischen Seeseite von Honshu. An der Mündung des Oyabe in der südwestlichen Toyama-Bucht gelegen, verfügt der Hafen über ein internationales Mehrzweckterminal, das Containerladung abwickelt; eine Begasungshalle erlaubt die Einfuhr von Lebensmitteln wie Gemüse und Früchten. Über Kurzstrecken- und Feederdienste ist Shinminato mit ostasiatischen Märkten in China und Korea verbunden. Die Hinterlandanbindung kombiniert Autobahnen mit dem Schienengüterverkehr: Die Shinminato-Linie führt zum Güterterminal Takaoka von JR Freight. Für grössere Containervolumen, Schütt- und Flüssiggut, Forstprodukte oder RoRo greifen Speditionen auf die Hauptterminals Fushiki und Toyama-Shinko im selben Hafengebiet zurück. Die Zollabfertigung erfolgt unter der Hafenverwaltung Fushiki-Toyama.
