Bis 2011 war Stranraer am Loch Ryan der schottische Fährhafen nach Nordirland; seither hat Stena Line den RoRo- und Frachtverkehr nach Cairnryan am Ostufer des Lochs verlegt. Heute dient die Anlage vor allem als Marina und kommunaler Hafen, eine nennenswerte kommerzielle Container- oder Stückgutabfertigung gibt es nicht. RoRo-, Fähr- und Begleitfrachtverkehre zwischen Grossbritannien und Irland laufen über Cairnryan (Belfast, Larne), das nur wenige Kilometer nördlich liegt.
