1788 als Heringsstation der British Fisheries Society gegründet, lebt Ullapool an der schottischen Nordwestküste bis heute von Fischerei und Fährverkehr. Den Kern bildet die RoRo-Lebenslinie über The Minch: Die MV Loch Seaforth von Caledonian MacBrayne bringt Passagiere, Pkw und leichte Nutzfahrzeuge nach Stornoway auf der Insel Lewis. Containerumschlag findet nicht statt - Stückgut reist allenfalls als Begleitfracht auf der Fähre mit. Die pelagische Flotte landet saisonal Makrele und Hering für den Heimmarkt an, was dem Hafen ein zweites Standbein gibt. Das Hinterland erschliesst allein die Fernstrasse A835; der nächste Bahnanschluss liegt rund 95 km entfernt in Inverness. Wer containerisierte oder zollpflichtige Sendungen bewegt, nutzt besser Aberdeen oder Grangemouth, für Frachten auf die Äusseren Hebriden Stornoway.
